I have used this recipe many times.  It is wonderful for muscle tension due to anxiety.  Valerian root has a very unpleasant smell, though, so you will want to mix it with a more pleasant strong herb.  I don't know how well it works on insomnia directly, but taken two nights in a row, you should find some relief if the insomnia is due to stress or anxiety.

The most powerful Valerian root is that which is still in the whole root form.  Powdered Valerian root does not seem to possess the same potency.  Mexican grocery stores and herb suppliers are the best sources for freshly died whole roots.

Make a tea to relieve symptoms of anxiety and induce a sense of relaxation over night.

You will need an herbal tea bag - one with a pleasant taste and aroma and one whole Valerian root, honey or raw sugar and a cup of boiling water.

1.  Bring a cup of water to a furious boil on the stove.

2.  Place the tea bag and one whole Valerian root in a tea cup.

3.  Fill the cup with boiling water.

4.  Let the tea bag and root steep for, at least, five minutes.

5.  When the tea is cool enough to drink, add honey or sugar to taste.

6.  Enjoy your tea and settle back for a good night's sleep.

If you suffer from insomnia, Valerian root may or may not help.  But, when you finally achieve sleep and awaken in the morning you will be surprised at how relaxed you have become.  Your most intense feelings of anxiety will have dissipated.  You should be ready for the first good night's sleep you've had in a while.

Use this tea as often as you like.  But, be warned that it can produce a state of over-relaxation if it is used for a long period of time.

Taking Valerian root tea at night seems to produce the best results.  The muscles of the body relax deeply over night, thus releasing the physical sensations in the body held in place by anxiety.  But, it can be used any time of day when you want or need to be very relaxed.

Note:  Decocting the root will make it a lot stronger.  The same root can be used more than once.
